“You look beautiful,” Dean told her when she opened the door for him.
She looked down at the dress she was wearing, the same one she’d worn out with her parents, and then back up at him. “Thanks. You look really nice, too.”
Dean was in a suit with a nice tie, the perfect complement to her. She grabbed her coat, and he helped her get it on before they left and headed out of the building.
“I tried to get close, but this place is crazy,” he told her as he led her through the parking lot. “I’m right here.”
Addison was surprised to see the shiny BMW sitting in the spot. Dean helped her into the car and when he got seated, he turned to her and smiled.
“You ready for this?”
“I guess so. Anything I need to know?”
Dean righted himself in the seat and started the engine, “No, it’s nothing, more of a social gathering.”
When he said that, Addison could finally relax. She could do social…that was until she thought about what Bryce told her about the resting bitch face. Now she was worried she’d put off the wrong vibe for Dean. When did things become so complicated?
“So, you said you’re pre-law, right?” he asked breaking her from her thoughts. “What made you decide to get into a field that’s mostly male dominated?”
“I like a challenge,” she said with a smile.
“That’s it? No big ruling somewhere that made you love or hate the justice system? No big influences?”
“My dad’s a lawyer. Ever since I can remember that’s what I’ve wanted. What about you? I realized you’re taking me to this dinner, and I don’t even know what you’re majoring in.”
“Social Work.”
That was different, unexpected, and something her parents would love. “What made you decide to go into Social Work?”
“I was in the system. I was bounced from home to home for several years, only there because the person wanted the paycheck. I remember as a kid being hopeful that someone would adopt me, but as I got older, the hope turned to the realization that my life was always going to suck.
“Then one day I was out skipping class and Patrick saw me. He took me to this diner, fed me, and I just sat there and didn’t talk because I didn’t want to end up being moved again, or worse, my foster dad finding out I’d skipped and him hitting me. A week later when I skipped again, there was Patrick, just like before. It went on like that for a couple months. Soon I was skipping just so I could go see him. I eventually spilled my guts to him, and begged him not to tell anyone.”
Addison was in shock. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. How could Dean, the guy sitting next to her, have come from all that? “Did he tell anyone?”
Laughter filled the car, “Yeah, he told. I found out when a social worker showed up at the door and told my foster parents that I was being placed in a new home.
